A copy of Superman No. 1 just sold for US $9.12 million. It’s now the most expensive comic book ever sold.
It was found by three brothers while clearing out their late mother’s attic.
They discovered it under sheets of old newspapers in a dusty cardboard box.
Despite its humble storage, the comic was graded CGC 9.0, one of the highest grades ever awarded to this issue.
That pristine condition helped fuel the record-breaking price.
This issue dates to 1939 and is extremely rare. Few copies are known to have survived in high grade.
With this sale, Superman No. 1 has overtaken the previous record holder (Action Comics No. 1) which sold last year for US $6 million.
The brothers aren’t just sellers.
For them the comic represented family history, memories and nostalgia, not just money.
That mix of rarity, historical importance and emotional weight pushed this comic past $9 million.
It’s proof that sometimes true treasure is hiding in the last (or first?) place you expect: an old attic.
